Detroiters for Parking Reform is indebted to the pioneering work of Dr. Donald Shoup, who passed on February 6, 2025 at the age of 86. Dr. Shoup devoted his career to studying the economics of parking policy as a UCLA professor and advocated for parking reform. His most famous work, The High Cost of Free Parking, published in 2006, brought the topic of parking reform into the mainstream. His work cultivated a following of “Shoupistas” around the world, including here in Detroit. We are grateful for Dr. Shoup, for his work and we offer our sincerest condolences to his surviving family, friends, colleagues and the many students of parking reform and urban planning that he influenced over many years.
